For 2008, however, here are some favorites with a shout out to Dear Author. I'd have never picked several of these up had it not been for The Ja(y)nes. Thank you, ladies!!!

Excitable Gals by Leigh Ellwood

Leading Lady
Cult TV star Dina Joseph doesn't mind working the sci-fi convention circuit, so long as every day of signing autographs ends with a night of out-of-this-world sex with a well-hung Mission: Jupiter fan. Naturally she's eager to take on two "elves" with phasers set to stunning, but when Kray and Lane reveal they actually are elves--come from an alternate universe to claim the missing link in their triad--Dina must decide between the adoration of many in this world or the eternal passion of two in a different reality.

Excitable
Nobody seems to believe Jenna McCoy's claim that her boss, Dina Joseph, was kidnapped. Private detective Jeremy Vanderkellen couldn't care less, either. He's concerned about becoming Head Wolf of his pack. When he's passed over he threatens to tear Toronto apart, but his superiors have a way of taming the beast. So Jeremy must learn to respect others as a good leader should, and find a love to sustain him. But, can the lovely Jenna be consoled by a selfish, obnoxious man who transforms during the full moon into a vicious, fang-bearing...Chihuahua?

Working the TBR

No one is surprised when feisty Delilah Dickinson opens her own literary travel agency in Atlanta after her divorce. But during her first group's tour of an old plantation modeled after Tara from Gone With the Wind, she finds herself in the middle of a murder mystery-and everyone knows death is not so good for business. So, with God as her witness, Delilah vows to find the killer.

Things start quietly enough: a visit to the quaint apartment where Margaret Mitchell wrote her great opus, then a stop at the Gone with the Wind Movie Museum, and a hearty Southern luncheon at Mary Mac's Tea Room that will surely guarantee her new clients will never be hungry again. What could possibly go wrong?

Quite a lot, it turns out. During an overnight stay at a lovely recreation of Tara-complete with a full cast of actors-things start to really go south. The actor playing Clark Gable playing Rhett Butler is found dead, apparently the victim of a fatal dose of Southern in-hospitality. Before anyone can even think "Where shall I go? What shall I do?" the police have the place under lockdown, insisting everyone remain at the mansion while they investigate.

Delilah finds herself taking over the investigation when their #1 suspect is her son-in-law Luke-the not-so-bright husband of her daughter, Melissa. But life starts imitating art when the actors begin taking their roles a little too seriously-believing they actually are Ashley Wilkes, Scarlett O'Hara, and Melanie. Next stop: Sunset Boulevard.

With all the drama of Margaret Mitchell's epic story suddenly coming to alarming life, Delilah's only chance to head off a not-so-Civil War is to track down and confront the deranged murderer. But shemust move quickly and very quietly, or risk becoming the next victim of a killer-who frankly doesn't give a damn..

An Attack of Random

First I'd just like to say: Dude, it's totally Monday.

Okay, now that that's out of the way, I'm struck by random observations this morning.

--Running late on a Monday is never good.

--When your four-year-old says he doesn't want to go to school, the next fourteen years are only going to get worse (in that respect).

--Said four-year-old plus backpack plus lunch box plus winter coat equals HEAVY. And yes, I carry him from the parking lot to the cafeteria where his class meets every morning.

--Doors without portholes or windows leading into hallways should not be allowed in schools. Either said four-year-old or I have been hit by wildly flinging and fast opening doors at least three times since August.

--Teachers, assistants and school employees should not wildly fling doors without portholes or windows leading into hallways open.

--"Rules of the road" should be observed in school hallways. No diving down to the inside corner for better position. Not NASCAR, I swear. Hugging square corners doesn't improve your time from the cafeteria to your classroom.

--Hall monitors should, you know, monitor the "rules of the road" and hugging square corners and third graders holed up outside the bathrooms.

--Giggling children are always up to no good.

--PTA members on bus duty should speak to everyone, or at least speak when spoken to. Nothing like having your "Good morning!" met with silence, only to hear So-and-So speak to the person behind you.

--Little old ladies who can barely see over the steering wheel and the interstate fast lane do not mix.

Sophie's Secret by Michelle Cary

Dumped by another boyfriend, Sophie Green decides it's time to make some changes in her life. Since her relationships have left her sexually frustrated, she concludes her horrible encounters with men must mean she's doing something wrong. Obviously, a weekend of uninhibited sex is the answer to her problem, isn't it? Sophie turns to roommate and friend Logan Rutledge for help.

Logan's had a thing for Sophie for years, but a 'hands off' promise to her brother caused him to steer clear. Until now. The mere thought of another man pleasuring Sophie has Logan putting not only his friendship, but his heart, on the line to help her. He knows he can never be the husband/father figure she's looking for, but if its no-holds barred sex she wants then he's her man.

Agreeing to keep their tryst from her brother, Logan whisks Sophie away for a romantic weekend at the beach. Recruiting their friend Reese, Logan introduces Sophie to a hedonistic new world, complete with silk scarves for bondage and fruit as foreplay. When an accident threatens Sophie's life, Logan realizes how much he wants their relationship to be more than one clandestine encounter. Keeping their secret from her brother is one thing, convincing Sophie he's Mr. Right is another.

Reckless Seduction by Amanda Young

When nineteen year old Cody Bradbury gets his hands on an invitation to the hottest party of the year at The Casbah, an exclusive gay men's club owned by his uncle, he doesn't plan to let anything stand in his way of attending. With a stolen invitation, fake identification, and a hastily thrown together costume, Cody sneaks into the club during its annual Halloween bash with the intention of checking out the action and possibly losing his long-despised cherry.

He can't believe his luck when Dante Santiago comes on to him. He's had a hard-on for his uncle's friend and employee, Dante, ever since he realized what his dick was good for. He's so enamored of the older man that he doesn't think twice when Dante starts referring to him as 'pretty boy', instead of by his given name.

Between his fears for his job and his stubborn certainty Cody can't possibly be the bottom he wants, Dante's giving him the cold shoulder. He knows Dante wants his body, but Cody wants his heart. Is there any chance the older man might want more than an orgasm? There's only one way to find out, and Cody plans to make it a night neither of them will ever forget.

Working The TBR

Lieutenant Howard "Six- Pack" Paxton loves three things: being a firefighter, riding his Harley, and his bachelorhood. That is, until the curvaceous Kat McKenna falls into his arms at the scene of a fire—and melts the six-foot-six tower of bronze muscle…

But just as passion ignites between them—and they explore new heights of ecstasy—a ruthless arsonist with a deadly secret and a thirst for vengeance becomes their worst nightmare.

I love it when a plan comes together!! Or, in this case, when a taking a chance on a new author is a success. Thanks to a Romantic Times ad, I admit I was intrigued by this series. Firemen aren't my go-to contemporary heroes -- I'm for certain why, I'm just 'eh' about them. But I'm a geek and enjoy reading romances set in Tennessee. So thank you, Ms. Davis. I really loved Howard and Kat, despite the fact I figured out who the arsonist was midway through the book. Can I also say that May is just too far away??

Weekend Games by Cara Carnes

Best friends Aubrey, Charlotte, Francie and Julia have had horrible personal lives the past year and have decided that needs to be changed. What better way to kick-start their sex lives than a little role playing on Halloween weekend? The four concoct the perfect scenario: each one invites one or more former male "friends" to participate in the games. The catch is that the men will not only play parts in the hedonistic adventure, but will create the roles in secret.

When Halloween night arrives, the four women discover even sexy men have constructed scenarios meant not only to tap into their dark desires, but also to push them to a new level of awareness about themselves.

What begins as fun and games -- a weekend of no holds barred pleasure -- but soon morphs into passion none of them could possibly have predicted. Suddenly a weekend doesn't seem like nearly enough time.

Working the TBR

As manager of her family's champion team, Rachel Garrison learned the woes of mixing business with pleasure the hard way. And no way is she going to get involved with NASCAR sponsor Parker Huntington, the guy who almost ruined her brother's career! But that doesn't mean she can deny her instant and unwanted attraction to his considerable charms.…

Parker is used to getting exactly what he wants—and when Rachel needs his help finding out who's embezzling from her family, their sleuthing soon leads to stolen kisses. However, neither knows how to trust in love…or whether they even want to take that risk. And Parker isn't about to let down his guard until he sweet-talks Rachel into surrendering her heart!

Currently reading Risking Her Heart and am enjoying it so far. Otherwise, I'm doing the things I usually do.

Had thought I might participate in NaNoWriMo next month, but I believe that's not going to happen. In the grand scheme of daily life, writing takes last place (over my day job, editing, family and relaxing -- not in that order, by the way), especially since I'm not under contract and have no real deadlines. That's okay -- for today -- but I'm itching to write and/or finish something.

Danger Zone by Sierra Cartwright

Who's watching you…?

The highly specialized Hawkeye team protects the world's most valuable things, secrets, even people. But now one of their own needs protecting. There's a cool million dollar bounty on Dom Wolf Stone's head. Trouble is, Stone's a loner and doesn't want the help.

That doesn't stop his submissive and former lover, Nate Davidson, or another determined agent, Kayla Fagan, from showing up at his Colorado ranch, uninvited. The spark, the anger, the hurt is still there between Wolf and Nate, and their first kiss reignites the flames that time and distance have not diminished. With Nate's help, Wolf uncovers Kayla's unexplored submissive tendencies. Under the Dom's unyielding instruction, Kayla explores her sexuality in ways that make her dizzy.

For Wolf, there's nothing better than having two very different, very willing, very pleasing subs at his command. But Kayla and Nate both want more. In addition to his love, they want him to give up control long enough to share his life completely. And that's the one thing Wolf is incapable of giving.

Book #75 for me this year was Pleasure Unbound by Larissa Ione. I was a bit skeptical -- simply because I'm overloaded on paranormal romance -- but this book did NOT disappoint! At times, I was reminded of Dark Lover (without the extraneous 'h', natch). Not a bad comparison; I LOVED Dark Lover when it was released. Great world-building, sympathetic, real characters, just a LOT of good things going on in this book.

Needless to say, I'm waiting for the next two books in the series, though February feels like a long way off!

The Flavor of Summer by Lyra Marlowe

The first time David saw Ariel, she was pinned against the lockers, being fingered by a football player -- and smiling. He never forgot that smile. But he let her get away.

Ten years later, a summer class reunion brings him another chance. Ariel is still beautiful, free, and erotically unpredictable; David, even in his own mind, is dull as dry toast. She wants to be sexually dominated -- by him. He'd be happy just to get laid. But with the help of the Internet, an experienced Dom who's willing to give advice, and Ariel's drawer full of toys, he'll take a shot at being everything she wants and needs.

Twenty-four hours of submission, bondage, erotic toys and one old-fashioned spanking convince David that Ariel's sexual preferences suit him perfectly. But if they're going to stay together, they'll have to deal with other issues: The suffocating summer heat. The specter of Ariel's free-love past. The disapproval of their old classmates. Their mutual insecurities. And maybe the most important question: Can a dedicated tax accountant really be happy with a woman who never balances her checkbook?

Whatever happens, the flavor of their summer isn't going to be vanilla any more.

Publisher's Note: This book contains explicit sexual content, graphic language, and situations that some readers may find objectionable: BDSM elements and themes, domination/submission.

Working the TBR

Still going strong with Harry Potter. I have less than a third left in Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows; I've been rereading because I don't want it to end (again)! Today, however, I'm starting

Dating Myself

Yesterday, I walked to Arby's for lunch (love those Loaded Potato Bites!!) and was greeted by New Edition's "Cool it Now." A flash of memory hit me square between the eyes -- me at my grandmother's house in the red-shag carpeted bedroom where I slept when I spent the night each Friday and New Edition blasted as loud as she'd allow. As I waited for those bites, I sang along in my head. Surprisingly, I remembered all the words to the song. That immediately made me question today's young adults.

When I first heard New Edition, I was in late middle school, seventh or eighth grade, I think. New Edition, my friends, was before Bobby Brown was Bobby Brown. Way before. Lots of great 90s groups came from New Edition. Okay, two, three, if you count Bobby Brown. But, if I put them -- or any other song/group/tv show I enjoyed in my teens -- into a YA novel, would they have to be Googled before the reader understood who they were?

I've been thinking a lot about this lately. Not sure why, since I'm not writing a YA (not writing period, but that's an entirely other blog entry). How iconic does someone or something have to be before it's universally known?

An friend and I were discussing Vampire Kisses by Ellen Schreiber a couple of years ago. Ms. Schreiber noted a few what I considered out-dated pop culture references, things a high schooler like the main character probably wouldn't know. I can only remember Cary Grant now. My friend argued that she knew who Cary Grant was when she was in high school; I said I didn't doubt it because she is highly intelligent and spot-on in pop culture. I too knew who Cary Grant was (I once helped a friend write a paper about Paula Abdul, and she wondered how I knew so much about Miss Paula. That too is a blog for anther time.) Which begs the question, if I mentioned The Smurfs or, better yet, The Snorks, would today's teen know WTF that was?

I can see if you made your character -- a high schooler today -- an 80s or 90s pop culture fan. That would be part of their personality and quirky behavior. Dating yourself as a writer is something to think about, especially given how quickly trends change. Something to think about certainly.

After every friend who read Breaking Dawn said "Hated it!", I decided to reserve my copy at the library. Since I've read a hysterical retelling, I may not even read the book when a copy becomes available.

So what am I reading? Harry Potter.

My mother-in-law and I got into a Harry Potter discussion last weekend, after which I decided I needed to reread the books.

A Guardian's Desire by Mya

When bounty hunter Freya Daniels attends a pageant for werewolf debutantes and suitors, she's far too busy enjoying the perks of wealth and ceremony to realize she's being watched. When she meets the submissive wolf Rayne, she cannot believe her luck. The androgynous male is just made for her voracious appetite. But she's not expecting the beta wolf to come with a very dominant and powerful Alpha, Fenris.

Fenris is just as much of a warrior as Freya and twice the brute. While she would normally never consider dating a bull like Fenris, there is something different about the Alpha, something even she can't deny: the attraction between wolf-mates.
